Women Self Defense

Team Silva Jiu-Jitsu is now offering a self defense/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu course for women only.



Women Self Defense Workshop

 
This course is designed for practical self defense, using full force, on live attackers.


 
We will instruct the students in the use of various, strikes, takedowns, joint locks and escapes from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. 
 
The emphasis of the course and ongoing instruction will be for the students to learn how to engage their legs into the fight as soon as possible. 
 
We stress this because using the legs in an integrated defense with the arms and head is the best way for a female defender to mitigate the upper body strength advantage of a male attacker.
 
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is recognized throughout the world as one of the best methods of coordinated self defense against a larger, stronger opponent. 
 
Its methods provide the defender with the ability to manage the distance between attacker and defender so that strikes and holds on the defender are rendered less effective, this allows the defender to survive the initial attack and escape.
 
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and other defensive methods used in this course are intimate close quarter combat. The practice of this type of live close combat training, trains the student in what it is like to go in and out of the “heightened fight or flight response” of a violent encounter and channel that fear into effective reactions using sound self defense techniques.
 
The practice of this type of combat over time enhances the students intuition and situational awareness which in turn allows the student to avoid areas, situations and encounters that predators count on for advantage.
 
The emphasis of this course will be on defending oneself against unarmed assault and acquaintance assault. We will not be teaching knife or gun “takeaways’ in a static slow motion fashion. Except for in very specific situations attempting to subdue an armed 
 
attacker is nearly suicidal and should be avoided at all costs. We will be using Gavin DeBeckers book The Gift of Fear as a reference for understanding different types of threats and the one situation when confronting an armed attacker is the best defense.
 

Syllabus
 
Classes are 2 hours Only six techniques should be used so that a lot of repetitive practice can be done.

Week One Techniques:
 
Technical stand up
 
Muay Thai clinch with full force knee strikes using three stations, two with big grappling dummies and one live with full krav maga protective gear.

Homework:
 
Learn how to spot weapons found in the environment. Bottles, garbage cans etc.
 
Learn to notice where the typical Fire Alarm Pull Stations are located in buildings which you enter on a daily basis.
 
Week 2

New techniques for this week:
 
Rickson Gracie toe lean and prayer position.
 
Closed guard with breaking posture and one sweep.
 
Positional sparring in the closed guard.

Self-Defense Fitness

Our Combat Fitness class is packed with tons of plyometrics exercises plus Combat practice that involves Striking,Grappling and Ground work. Our of the 3 aspects of fighting our Combat Fitness target every class 2 our of 3 point of view. Striking and Grappling. Kickboxing and Ground and Pound. Fitness and Self-Defense. The class is lead every Monday and Wednesday from 6pm-7pm. Monday professor Sergio Silva who is undefeated in the Mixed Martial Arts also a Self-Defense Instructors for the Brazilian Army and Special Forces in Brazil.His focus will be in 25 minutes of practical fitness and the rest of class is Combat training. On Wednesdays Instructor Nathan Butts teaches the basics of Kickboxing,Boxing and Self-Defense Fitness.
Professor Sergio Silva and Team Silva Martial Arts have been teaching Self-Defense and Fitness in Alameda since the year of 2008.
